The Metabolic Reset

Healing Before Losing “This isn’t a detour. It’s the foundation everything else is built on.”
75% of Patients Start Here Metabolic Rehabilitation Foundation Phase

If you’re starting with a Metabolic Reset, you’re in good company. About 75% of patients begin here. It doesn’t mean something is wrong with you — it means your body has been working hard to protect itself, and it needs a chance to heal before it can burn.

The Metabolic Reset is not about losing weight. It’s about restoring the conditions that make lasting fat loss possible.

Section 1

What Is the Metabolic Reset?

Your metabolism has likely been suppressed — driven down by years of under-eating, yo-yo dieting, or the appetite suppression that comes with GLP-1 medication. When your body isn’t getting enough fuel consistently, it shifts into conservation mode.

The Low Battery Analogy

Think of it like a laptop on low battery

When your laptop hits 10%, it dims the screen, slows the processor, and suspends background tasks — not because it’s broken, but because it’s protecting itself. Your body does the same thing. It slows your metabolism, reduces energy output, and holds on to every calorie it can. This isn’t failure. It’s survival.

The Metabolic Reset gradually increases your calorie intake to wake your metabolism back up. We’re not trying to lose weight right now. We’re doing metabolic rehabilitation — restoring your body’s ability to function at full capacity so that when fat loss begins, it works.

Section 2

How You’ll Know You Need One

Dr. Jones determines whether you need a Metabolic Reset based on your full health history. But there are common patterns that suggest your metabolism has been suppressed:

  • Consistently eating under a maintenance level of calories per day
  • Persistent fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Brain fog — difficulty concentrating or thinking clearly
  • Feeling cold often, especially hands and feet
  • Constipation or slow digestion
  • The scale has been stuck for 3 or more weeks despite effort
  • You genuinely can’t remember the last time you felt truly hungry
If several of these sound familiar, your body is telling you it’s in conservation mode. That’s exactly what the reset is designed to address.

Section 3

What to Expect

Nutrition Approach

During the reset you’ll follow an Ancestral / Paleo-Mediterranean eating pattern — whole foods, quality proteins, healthy fats, and moderate carbohydrates. This is not low carbohydrate. That comes later. You eat every day during the Metabolic Reset. No extended fasting periods while this phase is underway.

Macro Targets

NutrientTargetNotes
Protein 1g per lb of goal body weight Built up progressively over the reset — not all at once
Net Carbs 100–150g per day No need to be in low carbohydrate right now. That comes later.
Fat Fills remaining intake Prioritize quality sources: olive oil, avocado, fatty meats, full-fat dairy
Total Calories Increases ~200/week Gradually building toward your Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) target
How calories increase: Your intake will rise by approximately 200 per week until you reach your TEE target — the level your body needs to fully function. This gradual increase gives your metabolism time to respond without triggering unwanted changes.

Section 4

The Scale Might Go Up — And That’s OK

We want to be upfront about this: some patients see the number on the scale increase slightly during the reset. Here is what you need to know.

✗ What You’re NOT Gaining

Not Body Fat

At the intake levels involved in the reset, it is physiologically impossible to gain body fat at a meaningful rate. If the scale moves up, it is not fat.

✓ What’s Actually Happening

Temporary Water Weight

When you increase carbohydrates after a period of restriction, your muscles and liver store more glycogen — and glycogen holds water. You may retain a few pounds temporarily. This is normal and expected.

The Right Way to Think About It

“This temporary change is the price of permanent success. Once the reset is complete and fasting begins, this water weight resolves quickly. Patients who skip the reset and go straight to aggressive restriction almost always plateau or regain. The reset protects you from that.”

Measurements are a better indicator during this phase. Waist, hips, and arms tell a more accurate story than the scale while the reset is underway.

Section 5

Signs It’s Working

We measure success during the reset differently. We’re not watching the scale — we’re watching your body wake back up.

What ChangesWhat It Looks Like
EnergyFatigue lifts and stamina returns
Mental ClarityBrain fog clears, focus improves
Body TemperatureFeeling warmer, hands and feet less cold
SleepFalling asleep more easily, waking more rested
WorkoutsStronger performance, better recovery
MoodMore stable, less irritable
DigestionRegular bowel movements, less bloating
Hair & NailsLess shedding, stronger growth
How to think about progress right now: We’re not measuring success in pounds lost. We’re measuring it in how your body is coming back online. Energy returning, fog lifting, sleep improving — those are the signals that matter during this phase.

Section 6

Practical Tips

Eat by the Clock, Not by Hunger

During the reset, your hunger signals may still be suppressed — especially if you’re on a GLP-1 medication. That’s why we use mechanical eating: schedule your meals and eat them on time, whether you feel hungry or not. Waiting for hunger signals that may not come will prevent you from hitting your targets.

Use Calorie-Dense Foods to Hit Your Targets

You don’t need to eat large volumes of food to reach your goals. These foods pack in fuel efficiently:

🥜Nut butters — almond, peanut, cashew
🥑Avocado and guacamole
🫔Olive oil — drizzle it on everything
🧀Full-fat dairy: cheese, Greek yogurt, cream
🥩Fatty cuts of meat: salmon, ribeye, thighs, lamb
🥚Whole eggs
🌰Nuts and seeds: walnuts, macadamia, pumpkin seeds
On GLP-1 medication and struggling to eat enough? If appetite suppression is preventing you from reaching your targets, talk to your care team. A dose adjustment may be appropriate during the reset phase.

Section 7

When the Reset Ends

The Metabolic Reset is complete when three conditions are met:

  • Your intake is at or near your TEE target
  • The “battery saving mode” symptoms have resolved — energy is back, fog is lifting, digestion is regular
  • Your weight is stable or only slightly elevated at the higher intake level

What Comes Next

Nutrition shifts to a low carbohydrate approach, net carbs drop, and the fasting protocol begins. Your metabolism will now be primed to respond — which is exactly why we did the reset first.

A Final Word

Why the Reset Is the Reason This Works

The Metabolic Reset can feel counterintuitive. You came here to lose weight, and now we’re asking you to be patient with the scale. We understand that.

But the reset is not a delay. It is the reason this program works. Patients who invest in this phase enter the fat loss phase with a metabolism that responds, a body that has the resources to build muscle, and a foundation that makes results last.

Remember This

“The patients who resist the reset and push for aggressive restriction too soon are the ones who plateau, regain, and get stuck. The patients who trust the process and do the reset properly are the ones who lose the weight and keep it off. You are building the foundation. Everything else gets built on top of it.”
